TOP IT specialties among the Ukrainian enrollees: results of 2021 enrolment campaign

This summer, more and more young people are choosing IT specialties, seeing in them a bright future. Of course, there's always the importance of other professions, but specialists from different fields will show the first results of their training in 4-6 years.

Statistics, cities, popular universities, prices, and Ukraine's prospects for the technology industry - all this we will discuss in the article.

Analysis of the 2021 enrolment campaign

This year, the enrolment campaign has collected about 1.86 million bachelor applications and 166.5 thousand for master's degrees, which exceeded last year's results by 7%. As of July 23, the most popular specialties among applicants were philology (76,371), law (67,720), and computer science (66,123).

According to a long-term tradition, the leading position among universities is taken by the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, with 53,777 applications submitted. In addition, such educational institutions as the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the National Technical University of Ukraine «Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after I.I. Sikorsky” also collected many applications - 47 326 and 46 235, respectively. Future developers and engineers preferred to study in the capital: 21,233 people applied to the Technical University, 3,840 at Taras Shevchenko National University. In calm and peaceful Lviv, 7115 applicants chose to learn the basics of IT.

Let’s consider the most popular specialties among job seekers. Creative and intellectual resources of Ukrainian and foreign professionals gave impetus to developing new educational areas. For example, you can study data detective at the Ukrainian Catholic University, the National University of Lviv discussed above, and the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. There are artificial intelligence programs at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Odesa Polytechnic, and the most influential Lviv universities. In total, more than 200 schools in Ukraine offer high-quality training in the latest specialties in the field of IT. Moreover, on July 7, 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers issued a decree on the availability of international analogs of names according to ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education).

The cost of training at the Faculty of Computer Science, for example, in Kyiv University, ranges from $ 930 per year. The term of study for a bachelor's degree is four years.

Enrolment and training for a master's degree

Bachelors can continue their studies on a master's degree in different parts of the country and abroad. In 2021, contract training for IT specialties in Ukraine increased in value by 10%. The same situation is expected next year; for example, at Kyiv University, studying for a master's degree at the Faculty of Computer Science and Cybernetics will cost 1,265 dollars and more per year. To obtain a master's degree diploma, you need to study for about two years.

So, in 2021, the total number of applications filed was 11,483 at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, 7,738 - at the Lviv Polytechnic National University, and 7,061 - at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. In total, about 8,511 applications were submitted for the computer science field. That's several times less than the number of graduates who entered the bachelor's degree program. The thing is that after four years of study, the applicant becomes a full-fledged cadre who has enough knowledge to start working. Moreover, in most cases, young personnel speak English at an above-average level. That allows them to earn extra money while studying or entering Ukraine's labor market and foreign countries as a worthy and highly competitive specialist.

How is Ukraine fighting for IT professionals?

The numbers of graduates wishing to continue their studies in prestigious universities and faculties related to technology are impressive. Moreover, given that Ukraine has long been a platform for a rapidly developing IT industry, it is vitally essential to increase the number of personnel, the pool of which is still entering or already studying. A law that brings its work to the special legal Diia City framework has been approved recently. It is predicted that about 10% of the country's GDP will come from IT; income and the number of jobs will also grow.

In light of recent events in Belarus, an increasing number of specialists prefer emigration to Ukraine: about 3 thousand people have applied to the Ministry of Digital Transformation for visas. In addition, soon, the Cabinet of Ministers should extend the stay of Belarusians up to 180 days.

Conclusion

In 2021, the enrolment campaign for IT specialties had changed: for example, compared to the quieter 2019, when 40,356 people entered the Faculty of Computer Science, this year the figure has grown 1.6 times. That means that there is an even greater demand for quality staff.

Considering that Ukraine is striving in every possible way to develop the technological sphere, while it has already chosen the right to expand the opportunities for foreign investors, the profession's popularity is growing, and, accordingly, high-quality training of personnel. Educational programs of Ukrainian universities quickly adapt to changing market trends. So now, anyone can learn to be a data science specialist, a drone driver, a member of the AI development team, etc.

With the new project Diia City, the country has become a dainty bit for new IT companies and their employees. Many valuable personnel from the near abroad emigrate to a country that introduces new opportunities for their comfortable life and work every day.
